Chinese Acupuncture History
The practice of acupuncture is ancient, dating back even before history was recorded. It originated in China and has been practiced there for thousands of years. Today, this form of alternative medicine is used in Western society as well. There are doctors who are expanding their services to incorporate Eastern therapies with Western medicine. And there are clinics and practitioners around the United States who specialize in acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology. Chinese acupuncture history is steeped in ancient wisdom and heritage, and should be understood by anyone wishing to go into the acupuncture career field for themselves.

In the Yellow River region of China, 8000 years ago, there lived a wise man named Fu Hsi. He is credited with the creation of the yin yang symbol which started off as two lines. Fu Hsi carefully observed the flow of energy in nature and determined there are two primary forces, creation and reception. From this realization arose not only the yin yang symbol and theory, but the birth of acupuncture. During the third century B.C., the legendary Nei Jing medical text was written. The Nei Jing contains two parts, the second of which is extremely detailed regarding the practice of acupuncture. The information in this volume includes nine types of needles, different insertion techniques, 160 bodily acupuncture points and more.
What is most incredible about the Nei Jing is the accuracy of the information as compared with modern acupuncture. Between 1000 and 400 B.C., needles went from being crafted from stone to being crafted with metal, which they still are today. The famous Ming Dynasty is considered to be a very important period for the practice of acupuncture. During this time, the classic texts were updated and new information was discovered and recorded.
Chinese acupuncture history even dates to modern times, when Western medicine was introduced. Although acupuncture became less prevalent, it was and is still used by many. China is considered the leader in this field, although it is widely practiced in many other countries as well, including the United States. There has never been a more favorable time for alternative and traditional medicine than right now. With our modern understanding of the body and our grasp on advanced technology, it is possible to integrate holistic therapies like acupuncture with Western medical practices to encourage more effective healing and promote total body health and wellness.
